Through The Viewfinder

I’m back from two weeks camping and slowly getting back into the swing of things. We had a brilliant time and we didn’t want to leave but coming home to a little gift from the eBay fairy made up for it. Just before I left I won this Kodak Duaflex, I’ve been looking for one for awhile so I could try some Through The Viewfinder photography:

Through the Viewfinder photography refers to taking photos through the viewfinder of old cameras using modern digital cameras, this means you can get the effect of the old camera but without having to find the right film or developing it. It’s the best of both worlds. You do have to do a bit of DIY contraption building to block out the light but there are groups on Flickr dedicated to TTV photography and I followed the tutorial here and built my contraption from a cereal box and duct tape:

I only had a little bit of light left for my first experiment but I can’t wait to try it out when I have a bit more time.

Oh, they’re so fab! The camera itself is beautiful too. I’ve been wanting to try TTV photography for ages, the shots are so doft and dreamy looking!

I do love this style. So very raw. Your daughter is gorgeous by the way!

Don’t mind all that TTV rubbish, get some film into that machine!

fantastic… I’d love to try this out one day, look forward to seeing more of these

That’s quite cool, looking forward to seeing more photos from it!

hah, i knew ryan would say that!

The first batch looks lovely… I know a lot of people do it in PS but it isn’t as fun as the ‘authentic’ way :)

@Nathalie, Oisin and Donncha, I’m just waiting for a sunny day and some cool colours so I can get out and play some more.
@Christina, thanks! She’s always up for a bit of modelling which is handy :)
@ryan, instant gratification, that’s me, I’m far too lazy and impatient for that messing, I’d much rather spend time sticking cereal boxes together. If it was a Rollei on the other hand…
@julie, I’ve tried in PS but it just doesn’t work as well, plus you get to look totally ridiculous this way :D

I didn’t have the patience to do this so went the tape and 35mm slide film route, seems worth the effort now though, can’t wait to see more!

I agree with Ryan. At least try it – you’re so creative anyway, why not try something traditional like putting film into a film camera – it doesn’t stop you from being artistic.
