Family Photography Interview In The Indo

There is an interview by Bernice Mulligan in the Irish Independent’s Mothers & Babies supplement today with me talking about taking family photographs. It’s not available online as of yet so you can read it here in case you missed it in the paper.

I sent in a selection of photos and the ones they’ve chosen are mostly of a shoot I did on Arklow Beach just a couple of weeks ago with the very photogenic Feeney family. The two little girls were so good and just adorable, plus the sun came out and we could have been somewhere far flung and exotic, not just down the road in Wicklow!

The funny thing is, I do say in the interview that I don’t recommend taking photos in harsh sunlight and this photoshoot took place under a totally clear blue sky and bright sun. Also, I say to avoid shooting with people’s backs to the light and I break that rule all the time, including with this shoot, I love backlighting. I stand by what I said though, it’s best to know the “rules” and then you can go ahead and break them. Personally I’m a little disappointed when conditions are supposedly “correct” for photography, ie overcast skies and even light. I prefer a bit of drama in my light. The idea is to get to the point where you’ve taken enough photos in different situations that you’re not afraid of trying things and making mistakes. Happy accidents can often become tried techniques.

Great shots Claire, as always. They do look like a family of models too.
Those little girls are just so cute, nearly as cute as mine were at that age!
I pity the poor Da – very difficult to disappoint those girls by saying no to anything, reckon they’ll have him wrapped around their fingers for sure 😉

Am with you on the backlighting, have always found it to bring drama and depth to shots. Surprised you did so well in that clear sun though, the shots look like you had a screen to shade them with.

Am planning a shoot at the moment for a pal who owns an art gallery, they specifically want some tilt-shift photos after seeing my shots from the IBA Photowalk. So I’ve been using Google Street View to scope the area for angles (an amazing tool) and the awesome Helios app on my iPhone to check where & when for sunlight (if any).
Considering walkie-talkies for the folks posing at the gallery too (we’ll be way up on a bridge).

Do you think I need to bring any more tech to this project? 😉

Cheers.

Thanks Davy! The big help to me for this shoot was the white sand bouncing the light back up into their faces, the whole beach was a giant soft box.

I love the sound of your shoot, sounds like a military operation! I’ve not heard of the Helios app, will have to check it out.

Ah yes, forgot about the sand – just not used to intense sunlight at all in this part of the world 😉

My shoot is tomorrow, batteries all charging now. Helios app is the most expensive app I’ve bought (£17.99!) but it is truly amazing, was designed for pro cinematographers. Not a casual purchase, but a great tool if you shoot landscapes & natural light.

Cheers.

Hi Claire,

Wonderful article, well done. I’m a huge fan of your photography as you know and you seem to just get better and better! Thanks for your recent email too!

Best wishes with your upcoming new baby arrival, I hope it all goes well!! What a lucky child to have a mother who specialises in infant photography!

John

Stunning shots Claire.. the family must be so chuffed with the results. Just beautiful.

What a gorgeous couple of portraits!! Brilliant stuff with the article Claire! Well put together piece.
Funny to see the huge quote: “Always remember to have people facing towards the light, rather than with the light behind them” accompanied by the world’s largest collection of back-lit photographs 🙂 As you say, go and break those rules. Fantastic.
