A long time ago (well, 5 or 6 years ago anyway) corporate anthems were all the rage in the world of the internets. Back then I worked for a computer games company called Infogrames. Infogrames was quite a big company at the time with offices in France and New York and was responsible for games like Unreal Tournament and Alone in the Dark…our studio however was in sunny Sheffield so we were that little bit removed from the corporate side of things. I still remember the day when we all received the company email announcing with pride that we now had our very own corporate anthem to stir our proud souls. It was a very funny scene as a studio of hairy programmers and geeky artists listened in stunned silence to what follows, which I found thanks to the wonders of Facebook, just click the little arrow but be warned, it’s stirring stuff:

Well, I’m off on Sunday to London for the London Games Festival, well, specifically the Career Fair, so I’ve my bags packed (well, almost), my CV printed, my showreel burned and a couple of interviews lined up. I’ll have a day and a half in London to do some touristy stuff before the fair while Matt holds the fort, and the toddler, back here. I’m hoping we’ll have no outbreaks of chicken pox this time.

The games world is a pretty small one so I’m counting on seeing some familiar faces otherwise I’ll be wandering around the fair trying to pluck up the courage to go and talk to recruiters. I just never know what to say in those situations…everything I think of sounds like a bad chat up line.

A little over a year ago when I started this blog, my intention was always to use it as a way to learn a bit about webpages so that I could get my portfolio online. Well, I got a bit sidetracked when I realised just how fun (and time-consuming) blogging is but I finally sat myself down and got my portfolio done. That’s what a looming deadline will do for you.

You can find it here, or by following the button on the sidebar, and I’d appreciate any feeback, particularly if you find something is broken or I’ve forgotten to link all the dots. It’s sure to need some tweaking and I’m still getting my head around compression of movie files. It includes some animation from the game I was working on for the past year since it was released last week, as well as animation and artwork from older projects.

If you know anything about webpage design and you peek under the site’s skirts…yes, I hang my head in shame…the code shows I’m winging it I’m afraid. Still, if it works until I can figure out the enigma that is Dreamweaver, that’s all I ask for now.

The game I’ve been working on for the past year and a bit has finally reached the end of its extended art deadline. The end of a project is always such a strange thing; you have months of ever-increasing panic when you try to meet all the milestones and mini-deadlines. Then you have weeks of working late into the night, through the weekend, with such a huge list of things to be done that you know you can never possibly finish them all. Everything else (including blogging) goes out the window. Then, all of a sudden, it’s over. You sit at your desk one morning and there’s nothing more for you to do. The game isn’t actually finished, there are all sorts of bugs to be fixed, testing to be carried out, marketing and packaging and translations. But the animation part, the part I’m involved in, is done and now I feel like Wil E Coyote in the Looney Toons cartoons: still running like the clappers even though he’s gone off the cliff.

I can’t say on the blog the name of the game yet since it won’t be out until around October and this industry is very protective about these things. I am proud of the animation I did on it. Game animation is quick and dirty compared to the beautifully crafted work done in film animation but I tried to make the characters look alive and as if they were actually thinking about what they were doing which is something that is often lost in the rush to get a game out. I’m looking forward to seeing the final product.

So, now, I guess I’d better go find some more work! Anyone need an animator?

My husband is distraught this morning. He ordered an X Box 360 back in August from Play.com and has been dreaming and fantasizing about its arrival ever since. The European release date for this wonderful machine was today, and in giddy expectation he rang Play yesterday to confirm he would be receiving one. He was told…

“Sorry Mr. Wilson, it seems Microsoft have not made enough to meet the number they committed to us and so you will not be receiving one tomorrow. We have sent on your Quake 4 game (only playable on the 360) and you will receive a console when the next batch is ready (most likely mid 2006).”

“But I ordered all the way back in August!”

“Yes, but those who ordered back in May will be receiving the consoles we have.”

Then because they obviously could hear the trembling of his bottom lip over the phone…

“Perhaps if you call back tomorrow morning we will have some more information for you.”

Now that he knew there was little chance he would be receiving his console from Play he proceeded to ring around various shops in Ireland. Xtravision, Game, Gamestop…all sold out. This served to fan the flames of his anger towards Play since he had decided not to put his name down in any of these other places thinking he had it in the bag. Finally at about 5:30pm he got onto Tesco Ireland and was told their store in Dundrum was expecting a delivery at midnight. With ideas of camping out at the store he jumped in the car and battled the rush hour traffic to get to Dundrum. Instead of a long line of waiting customers all was normal in Tescos with no mention of X Boxes anywhere. He inquired of two young male shop assistants whether they were getting any in and was told yes but he could come back tomorrow and needn’t wait.

This morning at 8:30am he rang Tescos and was told two had come in at midnight but they were already gone. Hmmm, I wonder who might have bought those?

When he rang Play he was given a slightly different excuse than yesterday: it seems the consoles didn’t go out on a first-come-first-served basis. Presumably they’ve been distributed on some kind of customer loyalty basis.

So, he’s walking around like a child with nothing but a stub of coal in his stocking on Christmas morning, cursing Play, Tesco shop assistants and Microsoft. In his words he’s “Gutted.”

According to the Tribune's report the Gaelic Football players are up in arms because the game allows gamers to name the players on their make-believe teams whatever they want.

There was a report in yesterday’s Tribune that caught my eye. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be on their website so I can’t link to it but it was a piece on the ongoing row between the GAA and the GBA about the image rights of the players, this time in relation to a new Playstation game by Sony. Now, I realise that there’s a whole lot more going on behind this, it’s just one more chapter in a big beef between these two groups but it just struck me as ridiculous.

According to the Tribune’s report the Gaelic Football players are up in arms because the game allows gamers to name the players on their make-believe teams whatever they want. So essentially they can play the All-Ireland final all over again with players of their choice or with players from whatever era or with whoever they want. The players are angry because they feel their image rights are not being protected in this. Hmm. Oookay. But fellas, your images aren’t being used. Your names may be but as I understand it this is just in the same way that any game provides the gamer with the ability to name the characters. So your name could be used but then again so could the entire cast of Coronation Streets’. There could be a Corrie v Crossroads playoff on some gamer’s console. Hey for all I know somebody could be using my name to play Halo with!! I feel so used!

Or maybe that’s it. I just have to wonder are they peeved because they’ve heard the stories about Tiger Woods or Ronaldo or Tony Hawks being paid big bucks to have their images used in the games that bear their names. If that’s the case then they’ve got their heads in the clouds. Ronaldo was involved in all aspects of his game from the cover to the promotion. An image of his face was used to texture the head of the ingame model. As for Tiger Woods, he was mo-capped (wore a ping-pong covered body suit that digitally tracked his movements) so that not only was his image used ingame, but so were his signature moves.

Perhaps this is what they’re getting at, maybe the players are hoping for some sweet deal that involves them in all the merchandising of this game and gives them a nice wad of cash. Well, I think they’re barking up the wrong tree by blaming the GAA for not securing this for them. Face it, a gaelic football game is never going to have the same global appeal as a Golf or Soccer game, no matter if it’s got Ryan McMenamin on the cover. I can’t even find a mention of it on amazon.co.uk. I would say that it was Sony who wasn’t interested in going to the hassle of putting the players’ faces on the ingame characters and they wouldn’t have been interested in shelling out big bucks to secure image rights when they can just go the easy route and leave it open to the gamer. It just wouldn’t make any difference to the bottom line. Those die-hard fans would still buy it and those who don’t know about Gaelic football won’t know who these guys are or care about the game.

Plus, with the developers being Australian I’d say they just tweaked their Aussie Rules game and regurgitated it to make it GAA.
